Headings – Example 3
There’s one last example we’d like to share. We mentioned in the previous example that you should not skip Heading levels when going from Heading 1 to 6. It is, however, acceptable to skip headings if you’re going from Heading 6 back to 2 (you wouldn’t go back to 1 since there should only be a single Heading 1 on each page).
Here’s an example.
Note: As on the previous page, the headings below are coded as real heading elements (Heading 1 through Heading 4) for the example—so this page intentionally includes a second Heading 1 within the content. We’ve kept the structure real on purpose.
Heading 1: Page title
Heading 2: A section of the page content
Heading 3: A section of the Heading 2 content
Heading 4: A section of the Heading 3 content
Heading 2: A section of the page content
It is acceptable to jump from Heading 4 to Heading 2.
In the example, Heading 4 is used to divide the content of Heading 3, which divides the content of Heading 2. When it’s time to begin a new section of the page’s overall content, it is correct to use Heading 2.
If you want to re-review the pages on Headings, you can return to the Main Headings Page, or Headings – Example 2.
